1-Raja Kohat and Raja Adh

Before Hazrat Essa (A.S), Raja Kohat and his Brother Raja Adh came to this area and settled here. Raja Kohat settled near present Fort in the city and named it Kohat. While Raja Adh settled near Mian Gari towards the mountains. The spot is called Adh Samoot.

2-Raja Kohat and Raja Bagmaat

Two brothers, Raja Bagmaat and Raja Kohat, came here during the Buddhist era. Raja Bagmaat went to the top of Koh kuda and settled there, while Raja Kohat settled near Jungle khel chashmas. Kohat is named after Raja Kohat. The followers of Bagmaat made five fingers of Bagmaat with a stone and began to worship that stone after his death.

3-Koh and Hot

Kohat is the combination of two words - Koh (in Persian meaning hill) and hot (in Sanskrit meaning market). So Kohat means market of hills.

4-Shahenshah Zaheeruddin Babar (1505)

Tuzki Babri, the autobiography of Shahenshah Zaheeruddin Babar, narrates that Babar had visited Kohat in 1505 AD.

5-Ahmad Shah Abdali

From the history of Khyber it is mentioned that Kohat along with N.W.F.P province were administered by Afghanistan during the rules of Ahmad Shah Abdali, his son Taimoor Shah Durani and his grandson Shah Shuja Durani.

6-Sikh era (1819-1839)

In 19th century it was under the control of Sikhs. Autar Singh Sindhanwalia, was the Kohat governor then. He was replaced by Nawab Sir Khawaja Muhammad Khan of Teri in 1839.

7-British Era (1849)

In the British era, an assistant commissioner used to be appointed to administer Kohat. The present fort of the city, the railway station, the railway line, the Khushal Garh Bridge and the old cantonment were built in the British era.
